The $743 million camper manufacturer plans to go online on July 1 with 700 e-mail users on Bynari Insight Server running on Linux on an IBM mainframe.
The application replaces a Microsoft Mail server using Outlook as a client. The initial Mail application was installed in 1986, with a Novell NetWare server as a back end. But the installation proved unreliable under the Winnebago's heavy e-mail traffic. The company receives about 2,000 daily incoming messages and 1,000 outgoing. Microsoft Mail supports a maximum 500 users, so the company had to maintain two servers. Winnebago needed a third-party application called Spinmail for Internet mail. Attachments were frequently corrupted, said David Ennen, technical support manager for Winnebago.
